Movie Reviews

Here’s some movies I’ve watched since the last time I posted about movies I’ve watched.

Crash: This movie sucked. And I mean sucked. If you liked L.A. Story or Grand Canyon from 1991, then you might like this. Basically they set everyone up as either good or bad, then reverse it, and in the end you realize that everyone is very complex and not 100% good or bad. Bleh. What a piece of shit.

The A-Team: Surprisingly well-done prequel to the ’80s TV show. The casting was terrific (Liam Neeson as Hannible; nicely done). Unlike Crash, good and evil are pretty easy to spot, which is how an interesting story is supposed to work. Lot’s of action and limited goof-ball dialog.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: Micheal Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, who is a… If you’ve ever seen Micheal Cera then you know this role, because every role he plays is exactly the same. The difference between every other Cera movie and this one is that this one is virtually unwatchable. There may be some group of people who like this campy video game/movie mashup, but it’s no group I’m in.

Fracture: Is every Anthony Hopkins movie good, or is just me? This is a very smart courtroom drama with plenty of twists, but it remains easy to follow. Ryan Gosling was capable as the district attorney but I’m no fan. The only problem with this movie was that I watched with Nancy. She knows the ending of every movie about seven minutes in and she nailed this one with ease. I think the ending would have been a little bit of a let down even if she hadn’t seen it coming, but it’s hard to say. Worth watching.

127 Hours: This true story about a hiker stuck in a crevasse should be incredibly boring, but it isn’t. It’s a testament to the director, or editor, or whomever that they can take what is essentially a one-act play and make it this watchable. They could have left the jerking off scene on the cutting room floor. This movie contains the least watched five minutes in cinematic history. Maybe five minutes is too long, but neither Nancy or I were watching the screen, so we couldn’t tell each other when it was safe.

Just Go With It: Holy crap, Jennifer Aniston is the hottest 42-year-old ever. Other than that, there’s not much to like. Adam Sandler’s buddy has some funny lines. I still gave it three stars because…did I mention Jennifer Aniston is hot?

Shooter: Mark Wahlberg plays a no nonsense, tough guy, loner? What a stretch for him. Pretty good setup and a decent story. I wouldn’t run out and buy the Blu-ray, but it’s worth 90 minutes if you’ve got nothing better to do.

Gone Baby Gone: Is every movie eventually going to be set in South Boston? It seems like I’ve seen a lot of them lately. This is a good flick. Ben Affleck behind the camera is considerably better than Ben Affleck in front. Casey Affleck is like a less-bad Ben Affleck. Definitely worth a watch. (And yes, Nancy guessed the ending to this one too.)

The Town: Is every movie eventually going to be set in South Boston? It seems like I’ve seen a lot of them lately. Wait, didn’t I just say that? Ben Affleck directs himself in this one, but he doesn’t totally spoil it. Jon Hamm is the FBI guy. Or maybe it was a 6′ long 2×4, it’s hard to tell the difference.

Black Swan: If you want to see Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis lez it up, then by all means, see this movie. If not, don’t waste your time.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps: Micheal Douglas reminds me of my Grandma Gill. It’s very off-putting to see what she would have looked like as a man. The last truly good movie he was in is The Ghost in the Darkness, although he wasn’t terrible in Traffic. MD or not, this movie is just OK.

Man I’ve seen a lot of movies. I’m tired of typing. Here’s the rest:

Four Stars: The King’s Speech
Three Stars: Due Date, The Tourist, Secretariat, The Expendables, Snatch, Despicable Me
Two Stars: Hereafter, Millon Dollar Baby, Once Upon a Time in the West, Little Miss Sunshine, Good Night and Good Luck (I’m done with Clint Eastwood films)

I also recently re-watched Memento. I love this movie. It’s like taking an exam in advanced particle physics, failing it, and never getting to see the correct answers. Awesome.
